Changzhou is a prefecture-level city in southern Jiangsu, China, with a population of over 5 million people. The city has a rich history, having been previously known as Yanling, Lanling, and Jinling. Changzhou is the birthplace of Zhou Youguang, the creator of the pinyin romanization system. The city is located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River and borders the provincial capital of Nanjing to the west.
